Solvents
The expression "solvents" normally refer to volatile liquids, particularly organic ones, which are capable of dissolving gases, other liquids or solids without undergoing chemical change or producing such a change in the solute.
The majority of solvents are carbon compounds such as hydrocarbon or derivatives.
Solvents can be used for many different purposes and consequently have numerous field of application;
- Large quantities of solvents are used in the manufacture of lacquers, varnishes and paint removals.
- For extraction of dyestuff, vegetable oil, perfumes and resins solvents are used.
- It finds ways as spraying vehicle for insecticides and weed killers.
- Solvents are also used as auxiliaries in the rubber, glue, adhesive, leather, artificial leather, polishing and rayon.
- Dry cleaning makes numerous demands on a solvent.
